THE RWANDA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY AND SCIENCE EDUCATION CENTER, or RwandaSEC, is a project focused on education, capacity building, gender sensitivity, career creation for the women, the disabled and people living with HIV/AIDS, and wildlife conservation to be housed in Kicukiro District of Kigali, Rwanda.
Who We Are
Rwanda Wildlife Sanctuary and Science Education Center started with a vision of rescuing confiscated animals (wildlife) being sold on the streets of Kigali. Our founder, Dr. Jode Garbe, DVM quickly recognized that the need was much greater than providing sanctuary for a few. Our vision is to provide a venue for Rwandese to learn about their own environment, wildlife conservation, and science. Such an institution is CRITICAL to Rwanda's future development since land resources are in short supply, much deforestation has already occurred, and the population is growing at an astonishing rate. Local decision-makers need access to tools that will help them make prudent decisions about resource management now and into the future. This new institution will be owned, managed, and staffed by local people coming from underserved populations, e.g., women-heads of households, the disabled, and people living with HIV/AIDS.
